The Blind Side
Sep 19th, 2007 by joey

I just finished reading the best book I've read all year,The Blind Side. It's by Michael Lewis (author of Moneyball) and you should watch his talk at Google a few weeks ago (where I got a copy of the book. The entire story of how the book happened is interesting on its own and the story is just incredible.

Joey's Books

I keep track of the books I've read at aNobii, which I highly recommend. The short stuff is just below.

Shorts

Interviews, short articles and speeches that I have found particularly insightful.

  •  You and Your Researce Richard Hamming, Talk from 1986. Read in November 2005.
    • Interesting perspectives about how good science is performed and why you should do what you love.
  • Applying to Ph.D. Programs in Computer Science Mor Harchol-Balter, 2003. Read in November 2005.
    • If you are thinking about going to graduate school you should really read this. It is a great help.
  • Applying for Fellowships and then some Philip Guo, 2006. Read in December 2006.
    • Various writings about graduate school and applying to them from a PhD student.
  • Cargo Cult Science Richard Feynman, 1974. Read in January 2006.
    • Why bad science is done and how our expectations can cloud results.
  • Steve Jobs commencement at Stanford in 2005. Read in January 2006.
  • An interview with Steven Chu
    • The integrated circuit, optical optical trap, and probably many others were both discovered when everyone went away from the office for one reason or another. Weird.

Cassie's Books

I'm not as good as Joey about keeping this up to date (also on aNobii), but the books below are ones that I have been working on.

  • David Allen's Getting Things Done
    • This book is very informative. It's all about getting all the things you need to do in your life out of your head and on to paper. Although it is written for middle aged businessmen, it has a lot of good ideas about how to make your life more organized. It was definitely a good read and helped both Joey and I become much more productive.
  • Robert Jordan's ''The Wheel of Time'' series
    • This series is incredibly addicting. It's sci-fi, 12 books long. He passed away recently but the final book is in the works.
  • Christopher Paolini's Eragon'' and Eldest
    • Much better than the movie leads you to believe
  • Orson Scott Card's Wyrms
    • A lot like Ender's Game but a little heavier on the religion. I think it is one of his best
  • Lots and lots of girly books
Pizza Delivery

The key attributes for an awesome pizza delivery place are:

* Cheesy name
* Half-half pizzas
* Thick pizza but small crust.
* Front door advertisements
* Sweet deals
* Good tomatos
* Cheesey sticks

Berkeley

The pizza in Berkeley rules. Don't even question it. We'll fuck you up.

Vendor Rating Comments
Pizza Fiesta 10 Super cheap (3 medium two topping pizzas for $15 bucks) but delivery can be a bit slow sometimes. Totally worth it and very good pizza. Very good sauce.
West Coast 10 Go pick up and save $5-10 by not paying for delivery or a tip and receiving a $2 discount from West Coast.
Pizza King 8 They screwed up once and put cheddar cheese on a pizza. Not quite as good as Pizza Fiesta.
Pizza City 7 Comparable to Pizza Fiesta (similar deals) but not nearly as cool of a name. Tomatos are slightly overcooked.
Purple Pepper Pizza 6 Expensive but they have pasta. Crust is excessively large.

Mountain View

Although the pizza in the south bay is definitely sub-par we are working on finding some decent place.

Vendor Rating Comments
Mountain Mike's pizza 8 Still pricy compared to Berkeley. $23/2 large 2-topping. Good pizza though. Hawaiian was good, nice crust thickness, sauce is good. Can't use coupons online.
Tony and Alba's Pizza 7 Has pasta and online ordering. Pasta was very good, garlic bread was good, pizza was thick and tasty, good toppings. Sauce wasn't quite up to snuff. Has coupons (two for one). $15/pizza.
Fast Pizza Delivery 6 So far, not bad. Reasonably priced, pretty fast, good tomatos.
Maldonado's Pizzeria 5 Not bad, but overly priced. Forgettable.
Amici's East Coast Pizzeria 4 A little bit pricy. Online ordering. Super thin, horrible pasta.
